History of MemorialDay
It is observed on last Monday of May every year. It came into existence as the Decoration Day. With no exact dates, it is believed to take form after the Civil War. There was a dedicated group which used to decorate the Confederate and Union soldiers’ graves. Though the practice still prevails, the name has been changed.
The tradition of the existence of decoration of the graves was popular throughout the US. Later on, in 1966 the federal government Waterloo, New York as the official birthplace of the day as it started this practice since 5th May 1866. In 1868, May 30 was declared as the national Decoration Day as this date wasn’t connected to any of the battle anniversaries.
After the World War 1, this day came was recognized as to honor the war dead of all the conflicts whether it is civil war or any other battle. Till 1968, it was celebrated on May 27. After that, Congress passed a bill to make it on the last Monday of May, so that federal employees can enjoy three -days holiday. It came into effect in 1971.
